here are the current rankings (mostly speculatory, based on fame levels, the top 4 are pretty solidly the top 4, with Vivaldi also being pretty solidly at 5th and Shostakovich being solidly at 16) 1. Ludwig van Beethoven 2. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 3. Johann Sebastian Bach 4. Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky 5. Antonio Lucio Vivaldi 6. (Franz) Joseph Haydn 7. Johannes Brahms 8. George Frederic Handel 9. Frederic (Fryderyk) Chopin 10. Franz Peter Schubert 11. (Giuseppe) Domenico Scarlatti 12. (Jacob Ludwig) Felix Mendelssohn 13. Robert Alexander Schumann 14. Franz Liszt 15. Gustav (Theodore) Holst 16. Dimitri Shostakovich (Best of 1900's) NE ways the brackets work like this, 1 moves on the rest dont and fight for spots in 9-16, 5-8, 3-4 (depending what round they drop in), this is going to be daily (26 faceoffs by my counts, so it should take 1 month). First match should be a compleat blowout if people dont decide to just go "ill choose this guy because he is the under dogg". Here are their some of works... msxml.excite.com/info.xcite/search/audio/Shostakovichmsxml.excite.com/info.xcite/search/audio/Beethovenwww.classicalarchives.com is also a good place to check out

Well sadly im not the classical music buff, I just list listen to whatever I like, and sadly I havent been listening to classical even though its my favorite type of music. I would have to go with Beethoven as he writes really good violin parts (which is why I loved to play anything written by him) and it just seems like his music is much stronger, then again I havent listened to alot of Dimitris work.
I wont vote yet because if any of you who are familiar with his work would say I need to listen to more because im making a bad desision then please do so and I shall reconsider.

well try the 2 links I posted, they give a bunch of snippets to listen to, doesn't take more than 5 minnutes to get a good feel for what they were like. You prolly should try out the one listed with violin (in my link)
also for Final Fantasy Fans....the one listed as symphony #13 is a good sample to try out. Beethoven is already well known so I wont post suggestions, if you want to listen, click the link I dropped above
accually he did quite a bit with strings and violin...worth checking out if you are a violin players, though I dont think he is compition for Beethoven. result #29 is a good one to check out on the link above.

locking the poll woudl be good, ohh this sorta needs to stay alive for a while, as it is the only rankings reference I have (hopefully I did a good job sorting them and choosing 16 good people [though 9 are sorta givens, and 4 more are pretty definate])
