I am not talking about moderators, I am talking about modifications. For years, free things like counterstrike and team fortress classic have graced our PC's for anyone who owned half life. However, steam is offering a new deal.
In exchange of a large sum of money for engine rights and half the purchase price, people can sell their mods and get a largely improved SDK that lets them edit a far greater deal of the engine. However, this sparked lots of controversy as to whether it's right of them to do so. Garry's mod "9.1" update is going to cost $10's due to features it couldn't have otherwise, and alien swarm, well lets just say they're asses who could have done without a charge, but want our money.
What's your thoughts, should people's free of charge side work have a charge to us?

[glow=red,2,300]feh, in my opinion, if its their work, they should be able to charge for it...if you want it free, do it yourself.[/glow]

I personaly would never buy a mod, unless it was really really good, people have tried to sell mods, but most people, like me would never buy a mod.
I know that when I make mods I know I put enough time into them that I could sell them, but I never would because I know no one would purchase them.
However ... "In exchange of a large sum of money for engine rights and half the purchase price, people can sell their mods and get a largely improved SDK that lets them edit a far greater deal of the engine."
Its not like they have to sell their mods, but IMO they should be able to sell their mods as its their work, however not as many people will get them, and they have to be very good.

True.. but since you get Engine Rights you can change a great deal more.. though im perty shore they will also incrypt more of the source code.. but will give some away.. so that why you go to iso hunt and download the game..whcih will let u have full source rights.. well iligeally but still..
My self a person who spends more time talking to my guild and finiding glitches, then makng the mod(though when I make the mod its usaly a very long process and usaly is very good [except the time I changes a file on the disk...{no back ups there}] )

The big point about this though, is that up to this moment, nearly all mods have been free of charge and done out of players want to make a game.

Well true the mods should be free... And if I bought it I would market it for like 50c so it would be almost free so the person that whats to make the mod at any point in time can get it 4 free..
at least that what I would do...

Indeed, if I was to sell games I made or art I would sell them cheap, like for 2 bucks a unit/pack.

Yeah I see what you mean.. Though if I where to buy the Game with the Engin and all I would of course sell it or a fraction of the cost to any one... So lets say you wanted it I would just sell it to you for almost no money.. so you could have it.. and most likely put it up on here so that any one could get it...
