yeah well I just wanted to get some opinions cuz we're doing this at school so I figure this could be a good debate. personally I really don't see what's wrong with the "n" word and it's a classic so I say no but idk about other people

OMG hell no it should not be banned!
They have a point, but I have a better point: If you ban a book because of a word, people will look at that and think the word is bad, which causes a certain level of belief that the people are bad, and thus racism is continued. This cycle can be seen with many things.
I know they mean well, and think they are doing good by removing the book, but they are really just increasing intolerance and banning a great classic novel at the same time. Racism is embedded in our society so deeply, that it will be a long time before it ceases to exist entirely. But the only way to get there is to ignore it until it goes away. Bringing up all forms of racism and complaining about them will only make things worse in the end, even if they mean well by it.

I dont think it should. I mean, I dont know who you have for a teacher but I think Mr. McCormick handled it really well with the "n" word and whatnot. where even if yo read it you cahnge it and when we talk about and what not. But that is how it should be handled and if you feel that it is a racist book than talk to the teacher see if you can do a different book or something.

[glow=red,2,300]i dont get why the word "nigger" is shunned by the whole population of america...like black people call each other nigger and no one cares...and we dont care when people call us( white people) crackers...gah. another way of being racist against white people. well I think that saying nigger was perfectly fine when he wrote TAoHF...so we shouldnt have qualms about reading it. stupid people, you cant please everybody, so anyone who does object, they can just go home and bitch about it to their cat.[/glow]

i love your thinking lobbs it makes total sense cuz if we're trying to say it's bad and yet we keep bringing it up I don't see how we're getting over racism. we're just adding to it by making everyone aware of it now that people are offended by it. yeah and I know what you mean about nigger cuz blacks call eachother that and I mean yeah I don't hear a lot of whites call each other crackers, or yanks or anything but still why make such a big thing about a word? oh and in this packet our teacher sent out a guy in a fiction book is accusing of huck and jim being gay because they were naked together on the raft. it was only because it was so hot and it's not like either of them had not seen a guy b4 I mean they are a guy themselves! it's crazy.

Yeah when people say "That book is racist!" I just think to myself "God people are stupid" ITS NOT THE BOOK THATS RACIST, sure people in the book are racist but thats totally different, if the book was racist then its goal would be to make you hate black people.
