Every so often, there's a point when you're playing a video game, and you just have to stop for a moment and say to yourself; Hey. That last bit kicked ass! What are your 10 favorite moments in video games, and why?
Here's mine, and with the exception of #1, they're in no particular order.
10. "I heard them say we've reached Morrowind..." (Elder Scrolls III)- So you enter into a massive fantasy world for the first time, with only a pockerful of gold, a note, and a couple dozen pounds of pilfered goods to start you on your way, and the only rule being do whatever you want. Can you say "Freakin' Awesome," Johnny? I knew you could.
9. Light at the end of the tunnel (Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory)- So you're stuck on a train full of civilians, some of which are secretly armed terrorists. Quarters are cramped, and shadows are few... So whadda ya do? Go ninja on their ass. Just watchout for the oncoming train! *wham*
8. "Oh, my hero..." (FF6)- I laughed, I cried, I was amazed they could do that in 16 bit and make it still that incredibly cool. Not to mention; "Nngah! This is heavy! It'll take me 5 minutes to push it down!"
7. "Nnnnngh..." *slice* (Half Life 2)- "So let me get this straight... I'm in a town full of zombies, explosive barrels, giant saw blades, and shoddily constructed traps? And you just gave me... A gravity gun?" *immolates with pleasure*
6. "Better find a new place to hide, yougn'..." (Metal Gear Solid 3)- An approximatley 2 mile square area of rough terrian, with one enemy sniper in it. The battle with The End is possibly one of the most tense boss fights I have ever experienced. The fact that it'll sometimes show you through his scope as he reccomends you find cover before he blows your brains out is one of the many "HOLY sh*t!" moments it provides.
5. "What... Is it?!" (Resident Evil)- Funniest. Diologue. Ever. Also, the game does provide it's fair share of frights your first play through.
4. "Oops, did I do that?" (Black)- So you shoot the landmine, which sets off another landmine, which sets off another, which blows up a truck, which sets off a landmine, which blows up an oil tank, which blows up two others... There are few things more rewarding than killing a dozen enemies with a single bullet.
3. "Yes, of course... Mr. President." (MGS)- You may wonder why moments from the MGS games form 40% of my favorite moments. You've obviously never played them. Those five words out of Ocelot's mouth after the credits of the first game sent a chill up my spine you wouldn't believe.
2. "Put your controler on the floor. I'm going to move it with my mind." (MGS)- He shakes your controler, checks your kill and save records, takes mental control of your friends, and anticipates your every move. Hands down, Psycho Mantis wins the award for most badass boss ever.
1. "We're not exactly what you'd call... Human." (MGS 2)- Just when you finaly thought you had it all figured out- Metal Gear, The Patriots, the S3 Program... "Campbell" drops this bombshell on you. To put it simply, everything you knew is a lie.
